About Tikkun Olam

Tikkun Olam (social action) is based upon Judaism's historical position on social interest issues and coordinates social action programs.  Our community participates in programs varying from donating holiday gifts to underpriviledged children to delivering Kosher for Passover food baskets to the needy.  The students in our Religious School are encouraged to bring an item to be donated to the Florida Food Pantry and/or a few coins for Tzedakah.  All of our students preparing for B'nei Mitzvah are required to perform a Mitzvah Project of their choosing.

Past projects include:

  • Weekly visits to the homebound
  • Collection of sports equipment for underpriviledged areas
  • The making of colorful pillows for cancer patients
  • Volunteering at local Nursing Homes

This post was written by RAC Legislative Assistant Ian Hainline as part of the Union for Reform Judaism’s “Ten Minutes of Torah” series. It may only be February, but the climax of (at least my childhood’s version) of the story of Passover is the subject of this week’s Torah portion. Moses, in a scene worthy of any [...]

Education Reform Should Not Include Voucher Programs

The Union for Reform Judaism and 52 other organizations, which together make up the National Coalition for Public Education (NCPE), sent a letter last week to Rep. John Kline (R-MN), Chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee, opposing Part B of the “Encouraging Innovation and Effective Teachers Act.” This draft legislation released by the [...]
